Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are a relatively common complaint that we see as Foot Health Practitioners. When a toenail edge presses against and irritates the nail fold or adjacent skin. Ingrown toenails can have associated pain, infection, corns, calluses and hypergranulation. Hypergranuation is a red growth made up of tiny blood vessels, scar tissue and connective tissue. We have excellent success with treating Ingrown toenails at all ages.

Standard Footcare Treatment

Our standard footcare treatment is a twenty minute treatment for those with awkward nails or having difficulty looking after their feet. It consists of a deep cuticle & nail clean and trim with file and polish. We complete the treatment with an anti fungal spray application that will leave your toenails feeling incredibly clean, perfectly cut and buffed. Equally suitable for both men and women.

Fungal Footcare Assessment

This treatment is aimed at tackling those with fungal issues, yellow nails, thick hardened nails and fungal debris under the nails which can be sore. Our treatment uses state of the art tools to pair down the nails, clean and file them back and remove the debris leaving the nails immaculately clean and able to recover to the best of their ability. Depending on the severity of the condition and appropriateness, we can recommend our 4 week fungal program.

Frequently Asked Questions.

A toenail is ingrown when one or both sides of the nail begin to grow into the soft skin of the toe. This can lead to irritation and infection because of all the bacteria that are present on and around feet.

Causes of Ingrown Toenail

  • Cutting Nails too Short – when nails are cut too short, the skin on the sides can cover the corners of the nail. This causes the nail to grow back into the skin.
  • Poorly fitting shoes – Ingrown toenails are often caused by improperly fitting footwear. Shoes that are too tight can push the skin on the sides of the nail up over the nail, forcing the nail to grow in. Shoes that are too short can also cause nails to grow into the soft skin.
  • Toe Injuries – Injury to the toe that causes the nail to fall off can lead to ingrown nails because a new nail has a higher chance of becoming ingrown than an existing one.
  • Repeated Activity – Sometimes, simply repeating the same activity, such as kicking a soccer ball over and over again, can lead to ingrown toenails.

How Can You Tell If a Nail Is Ingrown

How can you tell for sure if an ingrown nail is the cause of your toe pain? In addition to pain, signs of an infected ingrown toe include:
  • Swelling around the ingrown edge
  • Pink or red color
  • Liquid or pus discharge
  • Warm feeling
  • Unpleasant odour

A “hard” corn may develop if pressure is concentrated on a small area. If the area under the corn becomes inflamed swelling, redness and pain can occur.

A “soft” corn may develop between the toes, where the skin is often moist, as a result of pressure or friction.

What are Calluses?
Calluses are thickenings or hard patches in the surface layer of skin.

A corn is a small, rough mound of thick, hardened skin. Corns can develop wherever skin rubs together. They usually occur at pressure points on the foot, such as the top of the toe “knuckle” or in between toes.

Corns are caused by one thing - friction. They can be trimmed away and ultimately removed. however, to permanently remove corns, it is necessary to address the source of pressure that is causing the corns to develop. We've seen them all and pride ourselves on our experience and skill in corn removal. May take two visits depending on size and severity.

The medical term for a fungal nail infection is Onychomycosis. Fungal toenails are caused by microscopic organisms (fungi). Many individuals develop fungal toenails at some point in their life. It is not usually serious, but can be unpleasant and difficult to treat.

These conditions are very common and for most part can be highly embarrassing. This maybe the reason they are left untreated and subsequently spread and become worse. Trust us we have seen it all, and fungal infections are a very common sight and can be easily sorted with the right advice. Ask us about our special treatment of your fungal nails issues.

The infection develops slowly and causes the nail to become discoloured, thickened and distorted.

Symptoms of Fungal Toenail Infection

Patients may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

• White, yellow, or brown discoloration of the nail

• Brittle or crumbling nail edges

• Thickening of the nail

• Roughened nail texture

• Separation of the nail from the nail bed (onycholysis)

Causes of Fungal Toenail Infections

1. Poor Hygiene: Consistently moist feet are at higher risk for fungal nail infections.

2. Inadequate Footwear: Shoes that promote excessive heat and moisture create an environment conducive to fungal growth.

3. Barefoot Exposure: Walking barefoot in public areas increases the risk of contracting and spreading fungal infections.

4. Nail Trauma: Damage to the nail can create entry points for fungal organisms.

5. Underlying Health Conditions: Certain medical conditions may increase susceptibility to fungal infections, including:

   • Diabetes

   • Psoriasis

   • Peripheral Arterial Disease

   • Compromised Immune System

The primary distinction between a medical-grade pedicure and a traditional pedicure offered at a nail salon is that the treatment is performed by a qualified Foot Health Professional rather than a technician.

Along with this a Traditional Pedicure is primarily cosmetic, focusing on nail appearance and basic foot care  and is typically performed in nail salons or spas, whereas our Medical Pedicure emphasizes foot health, addressing both aesthetic concerns and medical issues while being carried out in clinical settings with sterilized equipment
